House Fire Fatality in Harlan County Kentucky

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

From WRIL -

Kentucky State Trooper Shane Jacobs tells WRIL there was an early morning fire at a residence in the Putney community at approximately 1:00am Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

State Police were on scene, along with fire personnel, at a fully engulfed structure. Crews had to delay looking through the debris until the area cooled down enough for an investigation.

Later in the afternoon, investigators - with assistance from cadaver canines - discovered the remains of an individual who died in the fire, although the official cause has not been determined.

The Harlan County Coroner was called to the scene to officially pronounce the individual deceased.

The family of the individual has been notified, but until an autopsy is conducted, the person's identity is not being released at this time. No foul play or arson is being considered in this incident.

Also on scene was the State Fire Marshal, Putney Fire Department and Cumberland Fire Department.

Detective Andy Soltess is in charge of the investigation.
