Knox County, Ky. Sheriff arrests Girdler man after gun threats leading to a short standoff

On Sunday, January 15, 2023, at approximately 3:30 am Knox County Deputies Jesse Smith and LT Sam Mullins responded to a disturbance complaint at a residence on KY 3439 involving a male with a rifle threatening to shoot another male and female. After arriving at the residence, the deputies learned that the male and female victims had been forced out of the residence at gunpoint by Rodney Hampton and that he had barricaded himself inside the residence.


Deputies attempted to establish contact with 26-year-old Rodney Hampton of Girdler, Ky., in order to convince him to come out of the residence. After approximately 30 minutes of negotiations, Rodney Hampton came out of the residence unarmed and surrendered peaceably.


Hampton was arrested and charged with seven (7) counts of Wanton Endangerment -1st Degree/Police Officer, two (2) counts of Wanton Endangerment -1st Degree, two (2) counts of Terroristic Threatening - 2nd Degree, and Menacing. He was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.


Officers from the Barbourville City Police Department and KSP Troopers from Post 10 assisted in the arrest.
