Man accused of impersonating officer arrested in Claiborne County

From WVLT -

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the man accused of impersonating an officer and pulling drivers over with a blue light was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon February 25, 2020

Charles Lakins was arrested around 1 p.m. in Claiborne County and faces charges related to impersonating an officer, officials said.

Lakins is accused of using a late 90's model red mustang with silver racing stripes and blue lights to pull drivers over in Jefferson County. The vehicle had last been seen around Asheville Highway near the Knox County line Tuesday morning.

Lakins is accused of making two traffic stops: One on Old Dandrige Pike near Regan Road at about 8:45 a.m.. and the other near Asheville Highway around 9 a.m.

According to the sheriff's office, drivers should not pull over for anyone in isolated areas. They say you should drive to a public place. If you aren't sure if the person is a legitimate officer, call 911. Officials can confirm or deny whether a real officer is attempting to pull you over.

Chief Deputy Ronny Coleman said surrounding counties joined the search for the vehicle.

Investigators have not determined Lakins's motives for pulling drivers over.

JCSO said he is a convicted felon and a resident of Sevier County.
