Murder Investigation in Harlan County - one arrested

Harlan, KY. (February 15, 2020) – The Kentucky State Police, Harlan Post is currently investigating a shooting approximately 1 mile outside of Harlan City limits. Detectives from Post 10 are investigating.


The initial investigation indicates at 8:50 a.m. KSP received a call of a shooting at a residence off Shope Lane in Harlan County.


KSP confirms one individual was shot and transported from the scene to Harlan ARH and pronounced deceased. 59 year old Richard G Cody, of Harlan, drove to his estrange wife’s residence where he used his keys to enter inside. While inside, Mr. Cody shot multiple rounds and struck Matthew Smith, 39 years old of Totz.

After the shooting, Mr. Cody fled the scene to Washington Co, Tn where he was arrested and taken into custody.

Mr Cody is charged with Murder, two counts of wanton endangerment -1st degree and awaits extradition back to Harlan County.

Other charges are pending at this time.
