Report of a child drowning in Norris Lake yields no victim in overnight search

On Friday July 17, 2020 at 8:15pm, Union County 911 received a report of a possible deceased child in Norris Lake near the are of Union County Boat Dock in Speedwell, Tn. That caller stated he was on a jet ski when he noticed what appear to be the body of a child approximately a foot below the waterline.


Union County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the area along with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Union County Rescue Squad. Deputies were taken by boat to the reported scene but the body could not be located. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency conducted a recovered search as well.


The search was suspended at 12:17am Saturday the 18th and resumed after daylight with the Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department assisting the agencies involved. TWRA deployed a remote operated vehicle for an underwater grid search of the area.


After a thorough search of the area, a body was never discovered and there has been no report of any missing children in the area at the time of the incident.


This incident is actively under investigation by the Union County Sheriff's Office.
