Middlesboro Police Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson has charged two men for failing to comply with their sex offender registration.
In the first incident, 53-year-old Jerry Smith had no updated his state issued ID on the sex offender registry. Smith was found to be living at a Lynnwood Road residence which was 200 feet away from Ford's Wood Park, a place children were known to play. This was the first factor of the non-compliance since he was required to not live within 1000 feet of a park.
The second contributing factor was Smith admitting he was also staying with family at a Tunnel View Circle residence since being released from prison on May 7, 2025 and failing to notify the change.
Jerry Smith was charged with failure to comply with the sex offender registration - 1st offense and being a registered sex offender near a public playground.
In the second incident, Sgt. Johnson found that 58-year-old Fred Jones failed to notify his parole officer that his Dansbury Avenue residence was within 1000 feet of the public playground at Lincoln Park which he has maintained since 2022. This is Jones' second such non-compliance arrest for a Bell County 2009 conviction.
Jones was charged with failure to comply with the sex offender registration - 1st offense and registered sex offender residence restrictions - 1st offense.
Both men were lodged in the Bell County Detention Center. Neither has a bond as of this publication.
