A call of a man attempting to entice girls into a car leads to a DUI charge

On Sunday, August 9, 2020 the Harlan County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint of a male subject approaching two girls and attempted to entice them into his car with money. It was reported that a white male in a black SUV approached the two minor as they were walking in the Verda area.
Through further investigation, Deputies determined that the vehicle had been operated by 64 year old Jeffery Massingale of Verda. While conducting an investigation into the matter and attempting to locate Massingale, Deputies observed him operating a black Toyota RAV4 on KY38 on Monday. After initiating contact, Deputies determined that he was under the influence of alcohol.
Massingale was arrested and charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol. As a result of the investigation, he was also served with an arrest warrant for two counts of Unlawful Transaction with a Minor 1st Degree.
He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center with bond set at $20,000 full cash. The case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
