Cranks man barricades himself in an attic to evade warrants being served

From WRIL - The Big One -

Johnathan Mitchell - HCDC

On Tuesday night February 27, 2024, three Harlan County Deputies were attempting to serve felony warrants on 30-year-old Johnathan Mitchell at a residence in Cranks, Ky.  Sheriff Chris Brewer states that once Mitchell saw the deputies he attempted to run out the back of the home, but then ran back inside.

Deputies set up a perimeter around the residence and waited for backup.  Sheriff Brewer and three more deputies arrived on scene shortly afterward, clearing the residence. They found a female inside the home who stated that Mitchell was in the attic.  It was determined that as Mitchell was attempting to enter the attic, he dropped a rifle that was recovered by deputies.

Sheriff Brewer attempted to negotiate with Mitchell, but he refused to leave the crawlspace. A camera was then used to verify that Mitchell was in the attic unarmed.  Afterward, deputies made entry into the area taking Mitchell into custody without further incident.  Kentucky State Police also assisted on scene.

Johnathan Mitchell was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center charged with wanton endangerment - 1st degree - police officer, persistent felony possession of a firearm, fleeing or evading police - 1st degree (on foot), and he was served two felony probation violation warrants.
