Earthquake felt in several areas surrounding 3.6 magnitude near Fincastle, Tennessee

**The USGS is now stating this was a 3.8 magnitude quake** - 3:25pm update.


The USGS reported that at 2:12 pm a 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit 2.2 miles from Fincastle Tennessee in Campbell County. The depth was at 31.7km at the epicenter today - Monday, January 20, 2020.


WRIL has been contacted by listeners in Corbin, Harlan, London, Pineville, Cumberland Gap, Tazewell, Ewing, and several other surrounding areas saying they felt the tremors with this quake.


The closest fault line to the Tri-state area is the New Madrid located near the Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas borders.


This is the second of two quakes in the same area in two days. Most recently at 5:20am Sunday, January 19, 2020, the USGS reported a 2.8 magnitude earthquake. The Tri-State area is also known as the East Tennessee Seismic Zone, that spans from the upper northeastern Alabama to a portion of southwestern Virginia making it one of the most active earthquake areas in the nation.
