A short time before 3:30 on Saturday, July 5, 2025, there was a fatal ATV accident at the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area near Evarts in Harlan County.

Among several first responders was the Kentucky State Police who began a death investigation into the incident.

The preliminary report determined that a 22-year-old male was "found deceased as a result of the collision."

Harlan County Coroner John D. Noe states that the individual is identified as Brady Castle of Lawrenceburg, KY. Castle and his father were operating the ATV when they drove too close to the edge of the roadway, and it flipped, landing on him. He was pronounced deceased at 6:40pm. Castle's father was uninjured in the incident.

Initial reports of another individual being flown from the scene were unfounded.

Also on the scene were the Harlan Lifeguard Ambulance Service, Harlan Rescue Squad, and Air-Evac 88 out of Harlan.
