From the Harlan County Sheriff's Department -

Saturday night, August 23, 2025, law enforcement was dispatched to a Closplint residence in regard to a domestic disturbance call where a highly intoxicated male, later identified as 51-year-old Stacy Huff, was holding family members at knifepoint. At some point Huff obtained a gun and began making threats.
Evarts Police Officers and a Harlan County Deputy initially responded finding the family members walking across a bridge near the residence. Shortly after identifying themselves, Harlan County Deputy Jesse Howard and Evarts Assistant Police Chief Brian Moore were shot at by Huff, but not injured.
After an hour of negotiating with Huff, he stated he would surrender to Sheriff Chris Brewer and one of Huff’s sons, which he did shortly after 12:30am on Sunday, August 24th. He was then taken into custody without further incident.
Stacy Huff is lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center charged with assault 4th degree (domestic violence) and (2) counts - attempted murder of a first responder (peace officer).
Also responding were the  Cloverfork Volunteer Fire Department, Constable Scotty Moore, Cumberland Police Department, Evarts Fire Department. Harlan Police Department, and Kentucky State Police.
