Harlan man shot in the head, one arrested for the shooting

On Friday, December 13, 2019 at approximately 4:25 a.m. Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan received a call of a shooting incident at a residence on KY 840 in the Baxter community of Harlan County. Trooper Aaron Caldwell responded to the scene. 


The victim 25 year old Bradley Hopkins was transported by vehicle to the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital. Mr. Hopkins was suffering from multiple gunshots to the head. Mr. Hopkins was treated and stabilized at Harlan ARH before being transported to University of Kentucky Medical Center by Lifeguard EMS for further treatment of his wounds.  Hopkins condition is unknown. He remains at UK Medical Center.


Detective Jim T. Whitaker and Detective William Howard responded to Harlan ARH to conduct an investigation. During the investigation, it was determined multiple rounds of gunfire occurred outside the residence on Ky 840 resulting in Hopkins being shot in the head. It was also determined the male subject responsible for the shooting was 23 year old James T. Mitchell of Coldiron Ky.


Mitchell was located at his mother’s residence off Bradford Loop in the Coldiron community of Harlan county. Mitchell was detained at the residence and then transported to KSP Post 10 Harlan for questioning.


Mitchell was arrested for assault 1st Degree, three counts of wanton endangerment 1st degree and tampering with physical evidence. He is lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center and being held under a $100,000 cash bond.  Case is under investigation by Detective Jim T. Whitaker.
