Kettle Island Man Charged With Three Counts Of Attempted Murder

Bell County Detective Hunter Luttrell and Sgt. Austin Poindexter arrested a man regarding a recent shooting in the Kettle Island community.
During the execution of an E-warrant on Monday, December 15, 2025, 40-year-old James W. Helton of Kettle Island armed with 9mm and 45 caliber handguns, returned to his vehicle on Mary’s Branch Road a few miles down the roadway where he was met by Luttrell and Poindexter.
After being taken into custody, Helton stated that on Saturday, December 13, 2025, just after midnight, he went to his uncle’s house where his girlfriend was staying. Helton further stated that he knocked on the door of the home and his uncle and girlfriend began “making fun of him” and were having intercourse making loud sex noises.
Helton added that he was unaware there was another female in the residence and he admitted he became angry shooting into the window knowing his uncle was inside.
James Helton was lodged in the Bell County Detention Center charged with (3) three counts of attempted murder.
He is being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
