Knox Woman Dies in Morning Fire

On Thursday, January 29, 2026, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan received a call from Knox County Dispatch requesting assistance regarding a residential fire on Twin Oaks Lane in Knox County.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Richland Fire Department, and Barbourville City Fire Department arrived on scene and located a deceased female inside the residence prior to contacting Kentucky State Police. Trooper William Knight of Post 10 Harlan and Knox County Coroner Mike Blevins responded to the scene following the discovery.
The female was identified as 66-year-old Katherine Smith. An autopsy has been scheduled and will be performed at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort. Next of kin were notified at the scene.
At this time, no foul play is suspected based on the preliminary investigation. The incident remains under investigation by Trooper William Knight.
