From WRIL - The Big One -
Late Sunday night July 23, 2023, a short time before midnight, there was a serious and tragic accident on Highway 119 near the Coldiron community.
We understand two vehicles, a 2011 F150 pickup truck and a 2009 Mac truck/coal tractor, were involved in a head-on collision which caused a fire at the scene. KSP Public Affairs Officer Trooper Shane Jacobs tells WRIL that the F150 was traveling southbound on 119 while the semi was headed northbound. It was determined that the F150 crossed the center line and struck the Mac truck head on.
The cab of the semi impacted a hillside after the crash and was completely destroyed by the ensuing fire. The driver of the Mac truck was able to get out of the vehicle and was not injured or received medical attention.
The road was shut down for an extended period of time and Trooper Jacobs states that 59-year-old Abbie Brock of Harlan County, driving the F150, was pronounced deceased on scene by Harlan County Coroner John Derrick Noe assisted by Deputy Coroner John Jones. An autopsy will be performed by the Kentucky State Medical examiner in Frankfort.
Among the first responders was the Kentucky State Police and a Harlan County Sheriff's Department unit. Also responding was the Harlan County Rescue Squad, Lifeguard Ambulance Service, and Wallins Volunteer Fire Department.
