On Sunday night, May 31, 2026, at 11:30pm New Tazewell Police Officers Fuson and Smith responded to a domestic disturbance call at a Main Street address involving gun shots.
Officers interviewed a female victim who stated that she and three other people were all in a bedroom at the residence when 39-year-old Paul David Rogers Jr. of Middlesboro began flirting and making sexual comments to her. She told Rogers to leave her alone and he became agitated, began talking to himself, and then left the room.
The woman stated she then heard a gunshot then possibly three more and believed Rogers was trying to get into the bedroom. Another male victim began blocking the door. The other woman’s 12-year-old daughter ran to check on her and was pulled into the laundry room for her safety. The child was interviewed saying she also heard the gunshots and she was the person that called 911.
Also interviewed was Roger’s sister who confirmed what the other two people stated. She added that her and her friends had been at the lake coming home to find that Rogers had been drinking.Â
After the gunshots, the two men began fighting and Rogers stabbed the man. Shortly afterward, the sister and the man were able to get the gun away from Rogers. She admitted the gun was hers and that Rogers had found and taken it. The officers did find two bullet holes, one in the bedroom doorframe, and the other in the ceiling. The gun, ammunition, and knife were all recovered and placed into evidence. The male who was stabbed received medical treatment.
Paul D. Rogers II was arrested and lodged in the Claiborne County Jail charged with attempted 2nd degree murder, possession of a firearm during a felony, carrying a weapon while under the influence, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and resisting arrest.
