From WRIL The Big One -

At the Monday night June 8th Pineville City Council meeting, the second reading of an ordinance to repeal and dissolve the Pineville Utility commission was voted on and passed unanimously.

At the recent special-called meeting on June 2nd, the ordinance had it’s first reading as the city council wished to repeal the Municipal Utility Commission with the control and operation to be carried out by the City of Pineville and established as the City of Pineville Utility Department.

This repeal will take effect after the required (10) day publication in the newspaper and made effective at 11:59 pm Tuesday, June 30, 2026. The city's control would take effect Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Pineville Mayor Shawn Fugate told us after the meeting that the city has no plans for a rate increase with the takeover.  Also bills drafted from bank accounts would stay the same, but the use of the drive through at City Hall will now be available to make payments. The mayor also stated that there will be an advisory board set up for this new commission.

He also reminded the public that the plan is to hold off any rate increases with this cost-cutting move.  For several years, the month of July was when the previous commission would increase rates each year.

The mayor stated that he has no plans to “clean house” of personnel at this point.

Interesting to see the city take over the utility commission. I wonder how this will affect water rates and services for residents. The unanimous vote shows they're confident in this change. Thanks for the update! by Bus Traffic Fever

Unanimous vote says a lot—glad the council moved quickly on this instead of dragging it out. Curious how the transition to City of Pineville Utilities will affect rates for residents. I've been following local utility changes closely and found some useful context at https://gethookd.site
