UPDATE - Death investigation upgraded to murder for two men in Knox County

As we reported early Friday morning Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith told WRIL his department responded to a call in the Woodbine area Friday morning a short time before 8:00 am.


Once on scene Sheriff Smith contacted Kentucky State Police Post 10 to defer to state troopers in regard to a death investigation on Hedden Flats Road.


Kentucky State Police have now opened a murder investigation for the death of 36 year old Matthew Welsh of Woodbine. Mr. Welsh was pronounced deceased by the Knox County Deputy Coroner. The preliminary investigation indicates an altercation took place involving a stabbing at his residence. The incident involved 33-year-old Joseph Masters and 37-year-old Charles “CJ” McVey also of Woodbine.


Joseph Masters was located and arrested in Campbell County, TN. and is currently lodged in the Campbell County Detention Center, awaiting extradition back to KY. He is charged with murder, unlawful imprisonment - 1st degree and kidnapping (adult).


Charles McVey was located by Corbin City Police Department and taken into custody. KSP has also charged McVey with murder, unlawful imprisonment - 1st degree and kidnapping (adult). He is lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.


Detective Kevin Howard is continuing the investigation.
