Original coverage:

On Tuesday, August 16, 2022, two inmates walked off of work detail in the Benham Community of Harlan County. The men, identified as 37-year-old Terry Siler of Cumberland, Ky. and 39-year-old Joshua Mendoza of Alma, Ga., were working on a culvert in the area.

During the search for the men, a local school was placed on lockdown out of precaution.

Harlan County Chief Deputy Matt Cope tells us that while their department was not directly involved in overseeing the investigation conducted by the KSP, they did provide assistance.

We understand that the two men were in jail on non-violent charges and are not considered dangerous.

We have reached out to the Kentucky State Police for more information on this incident.
