Wanted man charged with attempted murder of a Middlesboro Police Officer using a sword

On Friday September 11, 2020 Middlesboro dispatch received a tip regarding a wanted individual, identified as 39 year old Frank Morton of Middlesboro, near Midnite Market on Winchester Avenue.

The Middlesboro Police had been on the lookout for Morton over several outstanding felony warrants for his arrest.


Initially responding to the scene was Officer Jeremiah Johnson who found Morton crouched behind a house near the store. He refused commands to come out at first, but then advanced forward with a sword in his hands making stabbing and slicing motions toward the officer. Johnson then readied his taser as Morton attempted to flee the area and as he turned, he tried again slicing at the officer.

Officer Johnson then deployed his taser striking Morton taking him to the ground. During the arrest Morton punched Officer Johnson several times and grabbed his throat and utility belt. Johnson was able to subdue Morton until other officers arrived with assistance.

Frank Morton was arrested and lodged in the Bell County Detention Center charged with attempted murder of a police officer, fleeing or evading police (on foot), possession of controlled substance – 1st offense (Methamphetamine), and resisting arrest.

He was also served the outstanding warrants for fleeing or evading police on foot and trafficking controlled substance 1st degree - Methamphetamine.
