Warrant tip leads to drug arrest in Bell County

Jowana Leanne Sturgill/Lewis - BCDC

Wednesday morning July 17, 2019 Deputies Edward Dray and Patrick Brooks were given a tip that suspect, 29 year old Jowana Leanne Sturgill/Lewis of Kettle Island, Kentucky had an outstanding arrest warrant.


In addition, deputies found out that Ms. Sturgill/Lewis was living with two individuals, identified as Eddie Lewis and Leon Brown. Brown was found to be a convicted felon. It was believed that Ms. Sturgill/Lewis may have been in possession of a firearm due to photographs seen on social media, in which she was pictured with a firearm. The investigation also revealed that Ms. Sturgill/Lewis had previously attempted to purchase a firearm on a prior date but was denied for unknown reasons.


At approximately 11:30am Bell County Deputy Edward Dray was able to locate and make contact with Eddie Lewis, walking on Highway 66 in Pineville, and inform him of the nature of the circumstances. Lewis willingly spoke with the deputy, assisting with the investigation by traveling to the residence with deputies and allowing entrance to the home on Newtown road.


Upon entry into the residence, Deputy Dray saw Ms. Sturgill/Lewis walk away and down a hallway, enter a bedroom identified as hers, and she attempt to shut the door the deputy made entry seeing her placing unknown items into a nightstand drawer, then shut the drawer. Sturgill/Lewis was placed under arrest for the outstanding arrest warrant, told the nature of the circumstances, and then asked consent to search her bedroom, which she granted.


Upon the search of the nightstand drawer Deputy Dray located several clear plastic baggies, a capped syringe, 2 cut plastic straws, a shoe string (tourniquet), a small digital scale, 3 burned glass pipes containing a substance believed to be Methamphetamine. Within the dresser was found a clear plastic bag containing a clear crystal substance, believed to be Crystal Methamphetamine. The search did not reveal any firearms.


No drugs, paraphernalia, and/or firearms were found in the bedroom of Leon Brown.

Jowana LeanneSturgill/Lewis was lodged in the Bell County Detention Center charged with possession of controlled substance - 1st degree, 1st offense (Methamphetamine), two counts of buying/possessing drug paraphernalia, she was also served three outstanding bench warrants.
