Area Sheriff's Departments warn of an old social security scam hitting callers again

Saturday night the 8th both Bell and Knox County Kentucky Sheriff's Departments put out alerts stating they received calls in regard to someone attempting to gain access to people's Social Security numbers through a years-old scam.


The caller claims to be from the Social Security Administration and tells the would be victim one of several things:

The caller or sender says there is a problem with your Social Security number or account.

They attempt a call, text, or email asking you to pay a fine or debt with retail gift cards, wire transfers, pre-paid debit cards, internet currency, or by mailing cash. Some have reported that the scammer has threatened them arrest or other legal action if they don't cooperate.
