Bell County Deputy Coroner confirms ID of wanted man as being killed in officer involved shooting

Bell County Deputy Coroner Jason Steele has confirmed to WRIL the identity of the man killed in an officer-involved incident on Monday night August 28, 2023. The individual has been positively identified as 47-year-old Paul Holland of Pineville.


Holland had been on the run after firing shots at two Bell County Deputies and fleeing from return fire while they attempted to serve a warrant on him. The incident took place on Friday night August 25th in the Cary community. Holland fled into the tree line on foot. The search ended at 4:00 AM Saturday morning the 26th.


On Monday, August 28, 2023, another Bell County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in a shooting in the Bradfordtown community. The Deputy was being assisted by Officers from the Pineville City Police Department at the time of the police-involved shooting which ended in the death of Holland.


After the incident occurred, 47-year-old Rebecca Caldwell of Lexington, was arrested and lodged in the Bell County Detention Center. The Bell County Sheriff’s Office charged Rebecca Caldwell with Criminal Facilitation to Commit Murder and Hindering Prosecution or Apprehension.


While Chief Deputy Jared Smith is in charge of the investigation involving Rebecca Caldwell,

the Kentucky State Police is in charge of the investigation concerning the police involved shooting.
