City of Pineville awarded $109,740 in discretionary funds for critical pavement improvements

From the KY Transportation Cabinet -

MANCHESTER, Ky. (Oct. 3, 2019) – During Thursday’s visit to Pineville, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Rural and Municipal Aid Commissioner Gray Tomblyn II announced $109,740 in discretionary funds for vital resurfacing work on West Kentucky Avenue and Alabama Avenue. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, raveling, and base failures. The investment supports Governor Matt Bevin’s commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity across the Commonwealth.

“The Bevin Administration continues to focus on taking care of what we have at both the state and local level to address critical infrastructure needs that improve safety and support job creation and retention,” said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. “This funding builds upon existing transportation investments and allows the Cabinet to collaborate with local governments to identify projects that will have large impacts to communities.”

Pineville Mayor Scott Madon identified these roads as being among the most critical in the city.

“We are grateful for Governor Bevin, and KYTC Department of Rural and Municipal Road Aid for their attention and assistance on this significant road project for Pineville,” said Mayor Madon. “The generous support delivered by Commissioner Tomblyn and the governor will allow us to pave all remaining streets in the Wallsend community to follow the Tennessee Avenue repairs that occurred last year. We are honored that the unique heritage and role of our city within the Commonwealth of Kentucky are acknowledged and valued by our state leadership through effective and vital programs such as this one."

Projects submitted to the Department of Rural and Municipal Aid for discretionary fund consideration were evaluated by the KYTC district staff to assess the condition of roads and determine the most critical needs based on factors such as safety, economic impact, and traffic volumes.

“This is great news for the people of Pineville,” said Sen. Brandon Smith.  “These resurfacing projects will have a noticeable impact on the community and I look forward to their completion. I’d like to thank the governor for working with the General Assembly to ensure that our local improvements are secured.”

The funding will allow for nearly one-half a mile of roadway improvements to two city roads that provide access to more than 40 homes.

“I am so pleased the governor has chosen to invest these funds in our beloved Gem City,” said Rep. Adam Bowling. “These road improvements will further the redevelopment and revitalization efforts of our county seat.  Kentucky and Alabama avenues are both well-travelled roads in Pineville and this investment will go a long way towards making them smoother and safer. I am pleased to see the governor make our area a priority. These improvements are exactly why the legislature approves discretionary funds in the first place.”

The City of Pineville is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the city for the projects.

Resurfacing work will address:

West Kentucky Avenue (City Street 1036) – resurfacing 0.183 miles

Alabama Avenue (City Street 1053) – resurfacing 0.280 miles
