Just before noon on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, reports of a possible shooting and the death of an individual began making their rounds on social media. Initially stated as happening in Harrogate, Tennessee with a person dead and another flown out, the incident actually took place at Hickory Star in Union County Tennessee.
The Claiborne County Sheriff's Office confirmed to WRIL that no shooting of any kind had taken place in the county. The Union County Sheriff's Office then confirmed that the TBI is in charge of the investigation. The TBI then stated that: "at the request of 8th District Attorney General Jared Effler, TBI agents are working alongside the Union County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a shooting that occurred this morning."
Just after 11:30 a.m., Union County deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 100 block of Dogwood Trail in Maynardville.
Upon arrival, deputies located a man and woman with gunshot wounds. The woman, identified as 63-year-old Susan Griffen Gorbet, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was transported to a Knoxville hospital for treatment. At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing.
