In light of the tragic loss of an inmate at the Harlan County Detention Center on the morning of Sunday, October 31, 2021, Jailer BJ Burkhart has offered this message via WRIL to the family and community:
"It is with a heavy heart that I do confirm one of our local people lost their life in the early hours on Sunday Morning, October 21, 2021, while in the Harlan facility.
As with any incident of this nature, our staff notified Kentucky State Police and the matter is under their jurisdiction moving forward. When their investigation is active, all inquires must be submitted to KSP.
At this time, MY focus is on those who have lost their loved one. My heart truly goes out to this family, the spouse, children, and grandchildren of the individual and the impact they left on their lives. My prayers and the prayers of our staff are with you all.
I'd encourage any of our people in the Harlan County and surrounding areas devoted to prayer, to keep the thoughts of this family close during this impossibly difficult time."
The Kentucky State Police has not released the name of the individual, but do report at this time that no foul play is suspected.
