McConnell/Rogers announce $450,000 will be going to Middlesboro in updating wastewater plant

From Office of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell -

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced the City of Middlesboro will receive $450,000 to upgrade aging infrastructure at a wastewater treatment plant.

The federal funding comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission’s (ARC) Central Appalachian Distressed County Infrastructure Program, which was established by Senator McConnell. These communities have received more than $40 million from this ARC fund.

Senator McConnell said: “Every Kentucky family deserves access to reliable water service. I am proud the ARC infrastructure and water program I established continues to deliver for thousands of families in Eastern Kentucky. This major investment is welcome news for Bell County and will provide vital benefits for years to come. Along with my friend Congressman Hal Rogers, we’re continuing to invest in this wonderful region’s bright future.”

According to ARC, the investment will provide reliable wastewater treatment to 4,345 households and 605 businesses. The current water treatment facilities were built in 1986, and the aging equipment is subject to frequent failures and costly repairs. The threat of overflows from electrical and mechanical failures is high. The renovations funded by this ARC announcement will promote uninterrupted service and could save the city $17,000 annually.

Middlesboro Mayor Rick Nelson said: “The citizens of Middlesboro appreciate the efforts of Leader McConnell and Congressman Hal Rogers for their help in securing this important funding for the citizens of Middlesboro."

Governor Andy Beshear had to approve this at the state level before it went on to Washington for consideration.

In September, Senator McConnell joined U.S. Congressmen Hal Rogers (KY-05), Andy Barr (KY-06) and James Comer (KY-01) to announce $3.9 million for water infrastructure projects from this ARC fund.
