Corbin vehicle fatality

From The Corbin Police Department -

Early Sunday morning September 3, 2023, a short time after 6:30am Corbin officers responded to a single-vehicle accident with injuries resulting in the death of a London man.


The accident happened on 5th street in the vicinity of Corbin Primary School. After arriving on scene first responders found that the vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree.


While Corbin Fire Department blocked the roadway, officers determined that the injured driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old James Barnes of Lily, Ky. had a strong odor of alcohol about him.


A passenger in the vehicle, 21-year-old Zachary Mathis of London, Ky. was pronounced dead by Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley.


James Barnes was transported to Baptist Health in Corbin then on to the University of Kentucky and charges are pending in the case.


Also assisting on scene was the Whitley County Ambulance Service.
