Ditch line accident in Middlesboro leads to an arrest

On Saturday night February 20, 2021, a short time before 8pm, Middlesboro Police were dispatched to a single vehicle accident in the Ambleside community on Lick Fork Road. The caller stated that he discovered a 1991 blue Toyota pickup truck was in a ditch line outside his home and that the driver struck his mailbox.


Responding to the scene was Sgt. Barry Cowan who found 36-year-old Michael Brooks of Middlesboro standing next to the vehicle. Brooks told the sergeant that he was being followed and asked the officer if he saw the supposed other vehicle’s lights, which there was none. Brooks also admitted to using Methamphetamine recently and hadn’t slept in three days.

Sgt. Cowan administered standard field sobriety tests which Brooks failed. He was taken into custody and transported to Middlesboro ARH for a blood test which is pending.


Michael Brooks was lodged in the Bell County Detention Center charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence – 1st degree.
