Evarts father shoots his son after confrontation

WRIL has learned that on Wednesday September 9, 2020 Kentucky State Police received a 911 call from a woman, identified as Stephanie Perkins, that her husband Devan had been shot by his father 47 year old Keith Perkins of Evarts, Kentucky.


Mrs. Perkins stated that Devan was driving himself to the Harlan ARH Hospital. Responding to the scene was Kentucky State Police Trooper Jake Middleton. The trooper states in his citation that upon arrival at the scene on Turner Lane in Evarts his investigation shows that Devan and Keith Perkins had a verbal altercation that turned physical in the roadway leading to the residence.


It was determined that Devan then entered his vehicle while the confrontation continued which resulted in Keith firing a Stevens Model 77 – 20 gauge gun into the vehicle striking Devan. Devan Perkins was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington as a result of the gunshot.

Keith Perkins was taken into custody and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center charged with assault – 1st degree – domestic violence for wantonly engaging in conduct which created a grave risk of death to Devan causing him serious physical injury.


Keith Perkins was given a $30,000 cash bond and posted 10%($3,000) jail credit. He was released later that afternoon.
