Tuesday night October 8, 2019 a short time before 10:30 pm Knox County Ky Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence in the Girdler community on Musket Lane off of KY 11 in regard to a shooting.

The victim remains unnamed at this time. The shooting was reported by Smith’s wife, who made contact with Barbourville Police Department Officer Adam Townsley. The incident occurred at the home of Mike Broughton on Musket Lane.

Officer Townsley made contact with Smith, and located him at his mother’s home in the Heidrick community, where he was placed into a cruiser and taken to a parking lot on Ballard Street.

According to the arrest citation, Kentucky State Police Trooper William Howard made contact with Officer Townsley and Smith. Also present at the parking lot were attorneys Billy Taylor and Dave Collins. Smith refused to speak to Trooper Howard with his attorney present. KSP Trooper Howard is leading the investigation.

Kentucky State Police Lt. Caudill tells WRIL that preliminary details reveal the shooting stems from a domestic incident. An unidentified woman, separated from her husband, moved to her parents home - the scene of the shooting - and an argument ensued at the home between the woman’s husband and another man.

The argument escalated resulting in 31-year-old Jerry Steven Smith using a handgun to shoot the other male subject twice. The currently unidentified man was airlifted to UK hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Trooper Howard arrested Smith and lodged him in the Knox County Detention Center.

Jerry Steven Smith has been charged with assault – 1st degree and is being held under a $50,000 cash bond. If released, he will be on home incarceration.
