Governor Ralph Northam said Friday January 4th he hopes to exchange an open dialogue with Virginia lawmakers as he proposed a package of gun safety laws that includes universal background checks and a limit on how many guns a resident can purchase per month.

Other bills Northam plans to propose would temporarily strip weapons from those placed on a court protective order and increase the penalty for leaving a loaded, unsecured gun near a child.

The package of gun legislation was effectively wiped out by the Republican-controlled General Assembly last year and the GOP maintains slight majorities in each house in 2019.
