From WRIL -

A short time before 1:30pm on Wednesday afternoon November 27, 2019 WRIL reported a single vehicle accident with injuries on Highway 63 in the Speedwell Tennessee community.

Initially several emergency service personnel responded to the scene including the Speedwell Fire Department, Claiborne County EMS, and the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office.

Once units arrived on scene it was clear that the situation was much more serious than originally thought. Arriving shortly afterward were Tennessee Highway Patrol units and more Claiborne County investigators who realized it was a shooting.

A man identified by his sister, Jessica Smith, to WRIL as 40 year old Charles Bussell of Middlesboro was found in the driver’s seat of the vehicle which had left the roadway. Smith tells us that she has spoken to one of the two investigators in charge of the incident.

It is alleged that Bussell had been shot by one of the two passengers in the vehicle, but it has not been released by Claiborne County Deputy Jason Henager - in charge of the investigation - as to which one yet.

What is known is that Charles Bussell died as the result of the shooting. It is also known that there was a male and female passenger in the vehicle with Bussell at the time of the initial call and that the woman fled the scene.

We understand that a search for the woman took place and it has been said she was taken into custody. We called the Claiborne County Jail and two names we were given are nowhere on their booking records. We have yet to receive any information on the other male in the vehicle.

We are awaiting further and official information from the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office.
