Three indicted for murder have first appearance in Claiborne Criminal Court - UPDATE

From WRIL -

Today three people accused of killing a missing Claiborne County man had their first arraignment after a Grand Jury hearing.

26-year-old Patrick Andrew Smith, 23-year-old Courtney L. Gilpin, and 36-year-old Jimmy Lee Riffe, have been indicted and all face one count each of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery connected to the death of 28-year-old Aaron Massengill.

The trio had their brief arraignment before Judge Shane Sexton this morning at 8:30 am. WRIL has learned that while Gilpin and Riffe will continue through the process with their current attorneys, Patrick Smith’s attorney had a conflict, and he will be getting a new lawyer.

While a trial date has not been put on the calendar yet, a status date has been set for June 14, 2021.
