Two state police pursuit brief update

From WRIL -

Christopher Powell - BCDC

The individual responsible for a two state stolen vehicle pursuit starting in Claiborne County traveling through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel into Middlesboro ending in Pineville, was booked into the Bell County Detention Center this morning just before 6:00am.

WRIL was on scene at the conclusion of the chase as MPD and KSP units corralled 34 year old Christopher Powell of New Tazewell into a guard rail on Highway 25E in Pineville near the Tennessee Avenue intersection.

Powell jumped out of the stolen Nissan Pathfinder underestimating a steep 40 foot embankment and fell tumbling down into a concrete ditch line where he was placed under arrest after continuing to resist by Middlesboro Officers Jeremiah Johnson, K-9 Officer Harvey Johnson, and KSP trooper Josh Messer. Bell County EMS was called to the scene to treat Powell for injuries sustained in the fall and he was taken to PCHC.

We can tell you that Middlesboro Police Chief Tom Busic is working on a more detailed release with Powell's Kentucky charges while the Claiborne County Sheriff's Department is working on their charges for Tennessee.

In Kentucky alone Powell has been given at least 26 charges. Among them are speeding, wanton endangerment police officer, fleeing or evading, and possession charges.

Also assisting in Middlesboro were Park Rangers from the CGNPS.
